VSA Michigan, the State organization on arts and disability, commemorates its 25th birthday this year and over 900 children, youth, and adults with disabilities in Genesee County are taking part in the festivities. Through artist residencies in classrooms, afterschool programs, adult art clubs, and exhibits, VSA artists—many with general education peers—engage in the visual and performing arts. Led by professional artists, the theme "Color Splash 2012" is coming to life in dozens of local schools and Genesee Intermediate School District programs.
The works are created in a variety of media by students, ages 2 through 42. This is not only a form of creative expression for many, but their main form of communication. Most VSA artists will celebrate their artistic accomplishments with their peers at art festivals in the spring. The FIA will host one such event at the FIA Art School on the morning of May 24, 2012, in which special needs classes will engage in creative activities in studio spaces throughout the building.

Nathanial Armstrong is an emerging talent pursuing an Associates degree in Graphic Arts at Mott Community College. Nathanial works under the pseudonym, L.A. Moore, which is a combination of his father's names and his own initials. He works in both realistic and abstract imagery and uses a variety of media, but will exhibit portraits in pastels and oils. Armstrong's abstract works are dreamlike scenarios drawn from imagination. He is currently seeking national gallery representation and looks forward to a free-lance studio art career.
